| Abstract | According to Brazilian legislation, all federation states belonging to the Legal Amazon region must present an Ecological-Economical Zoning (ZEE) proposal, following the guidelines set forth by the Ministry of the Environment. Such zoning provides the government with tools to support decision making, establish public policies and plans following principals based on sustainability (environment, social and economic). A ZEE can be made at different geographical scales, covering a range of extents from local to national. Embrapa Satellite Monitoring, along with the state of Maranhão, carried out a state level zoning, at the scale of 1:1,000,000, known as Macro Ecological-Economical Zoning (MacroZEE). Many of the procedures used in this effort rely on the use of GIS and Remote Sensing analysis. However, zoning projects are often a multidisciplinary project which requires a diverse team of experts working as a group. Thus, the geospatial databases used must be well documented and organized, to allow group members easy retrieval and access to the data needed. In fact, the Ecological-Economical Zoning guidelines clearly state the importance of using geospatial databases that rely on commonly known technology, easily accessible that include both primary and secondary data utilized in the project, as well as its metadata. Here we present the procedure used to catalog, store and distribute the geospatial database developed for the MacroZEE of Maranhão state. |
